Hey I live in SF but go back and forth from SF to LA. I drive a 1970 bug and even though I've made the drive back and forth about 10 times already, lil worried my car can't take that much for long. So i was wondering what would you consider an easier drive. Easier in terms of hills and speeds, as well as weather conditions. So easier? the 5? or the 101?? thanks for the input.

Interstate 5. Fifty miles less driving, one hour less driving. Less hills, lots of road services.

Less scenic though.

Interstate 5. It is a relatively newer freeway built to more modern standards. It is straighter, with less elevation changes, limited access - this would mean, in my opinion, minimized speed changes which would save wear on brakes, engine, etc. You can see further down the road so you can plan passing maneuvers and anticipate traffic better.

I agree with the above post about it being less scenic...

I always use the 5 since it is faster, but I would ask you if the ride up to Tejon Pass would be too much for your car. Its a crazy incline and can get very windy. I havent been on 101 in ages, but I dont recall anything similar to Tejon or even Altamont along the way.

The Cuesta Pass goes up to 1500 feet, but otherwise the 101 manages to go through canyons the whole way down to SoCal. The Tejon in Tehachapi on the I-5 route is over 4000 feet.

For a car that old I would take 101. Even though its longer and windier it doesn't have anything that comes close to the steep grade along the Grapevine. 101 would be better imo hills and speed wise in a 1970 bug. The grapevine is very hard on old cars IMO.

I saw many, many overheated vehicles in the grapevine on my way up to yosemite this summer. It is a long, fairly steep climb. I was passing big rigs that were going under 20mph.

His VW is air cooled, I think blowing a gasket is more of a concern.

I have an '81 VW Rabbit Diesel with a whopping 52 horses and when I drive to Oregon, I take the 5 north from the 60 from the 15 from theTemecula area. The Grapevine is a b*tch, but I just blend in with the big rigs and stay in the slow lane. My little car chugs it like a champ...at extremely slow speeds...LOL! After that, the rest is a piece of cake...flat...until the Shasta Dam...then the challenges begin anew...
