We live in NC but my husband's boss wants him to open an office on the west coast. We have three small children and prefer a community with great public schools. I know California is a huge state and this is a very general question but I just don't have a clue where to start looking. The only requirement for our location is that we live within an hour of a large airport. Also, we can only afford rent/mortgage of between 1500-2000 per month.

Thanks so much for any advice!

wow, that isn't a lot for rent or mortgage payments in California no matter where you live..

I am sure others who live there now will be able to give you more ideas, I think with 3 little ones and not a huge amount of money for rent probably somewhere near Sac would be my first choice.. I don't even know what you can get there with good schools and a safe envirorment..

There are always some small towns like Island Empire (so Ca) maybe..I really don't know..

There are no major cities that would meet your requirements nor any areas along the coast..

If I had to live in California my choice would be Needles.
Its right down the road from where I live now.

Thanks for the replies so far. I will check those areas for sure. I know that our housing budget is really limiting but that's what we have to work with. Sorry...I didn't know "Cali" was offensive. I was just in a hurry this moning.

With your pricing requirements and airport requirement, I'd say Sacramento. Maybe Fresno/Clovis, although Fresno's airport is more of a regional one (thought it does have a good number of destinations).

In most of the metro areas (Bay area, LA, San Diego) you might find it hard to be in a good school district with your mortgage constraints. But it's probably possible--just harder to find.

Default What Can You Afford?

If $ were no object, definitely Ross or Belvedere Island. I you aren't a millionaire try Mendocino and north as that area is lovely and will experience the next real estate boom.
