Groceries are not taxed in CA, but prepared food is. Sometimes the dividing line is rather silly. If you buy a 20-oz plastic bottle of soda from the cooler at a grocery store, it is a "grocery item." If you go to the deli at the same grocery store and get a 20-ounce drink from the fountain in a cup, it is a "prepared food."

9.75 across LA county, 10.25 on Catalina Island. Only county higher that I know in the nation is Cook County, Illinois, which is 10.25% I believe.

There seems to be some kind of loophole here?
I get coffee at Coffee Bean every morning. They always ask "for here or to go?" .... last year i finally asked why they need to ask this, and the cashier mentioned that there is no sales tax if you specify "to-go". I've noticed this practice in several Coffee Bean locations in LA and San Bernardino counties.
Sure enough, if you watch them ring the items up, once "to-go" is selected, the price drops on the customer readout screen.

haha, that's funny about the Coffee Bean.
Also, services are not taxed - like haircuts and car washes.
But most importantly, any purchase from Amazon is not taxed either
