I just got a temp job in Berkeley, CA and will be commuting everyday from Stockton, CA. Does anyone know of a safe shortcut or the quickest way to drive there without a lot of traffic? I know its approximately 53 miles from Stockton but I want the fastest 53 miles without bumper to bumper traffic if possible. Thank you for your help.......L.

I would take 4 through Discovery Bay, Brentwood, Antioch then the 242 to Walnut Creek, and 24 through the tunnel and into Berkeley, probably.

Actually 4 through Pittsburg/Antioch is congested even worse than 580 during rush hour.

Weeelll, I guess there ain't no good way. cause 580 sucks. Seems half the Central Valley drains through 580 at rush hour. What about Marsh Creek Road?

There is a reason I stay away from urban areas, I am not sufficiently socialized to tolerate heavy traffic.

That could work... Or even 12 through Fairfield and Vallejo, depending on where exactly in Stockton and Berkeley.

BTW it's only 53 miles as the crow flies. It's 75 to 90 miles by car. Not a pretty commute, even without traffic.

If I were her, I'd rent a room in Berkeley for the work week.

4 and 580 are 2 of the most horrendous commutes in California.

This is doable via public transit if you are so inclined:

Take the Ace Train from Stockton to Pleasanton.

Then take the free shuttle bus from the Pleasanton Ace Train Station to the Dublin/ Pleasanton BART station and from there you can take BART all the way to Downtown Berkeley(take the SF Train to Bayfair and from there transfer to the Richmond Train)

Downtown Berkeley BART Station

OR:
Take Amtrak from Stockton to Richmond

In Richmond, BART and Amtrak stations are right adjacent. From Richmond you'd take a very short BART ride to Downtown Berkeley.

I think Id prefer Amtrak from Stockton to Richmond and then BART from Richmond to Berkeley.

Anyway,
Food for thought.

I wonder how long it would take to go by boat through the Delta?...

Actually, I'm pretty sure that THE most horrendous commute in California is the evening commute on 405 past LAX.

On a sailboat, you'd be in Berkeley just in time to go home. You can't use a motorboat, because it's been ruled that propeller blades have the potential to hurt precious California delta smelt.

That probably won't work, the earliest Amtrak train from Stockton to Richmond departs Stockton at 9 AM, so she won't get to work till 11..
