Reporting from Washington and Sacramento - For Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, blasting the federal government for California's problems has become an oft-used routine since his first days in office. But in a new twist, federal officials are firing back.

The bicoastal fusillade, which continued Monday, began last week when Schwarzenegger attributed part of the state's $20-billion deficit to what he called an unfair federal funding formula, criticized the national healthcare plan and included an implicit message of extortion for federal lawmakers in his budget: Come up with an extra $6.9 billion for California or share the blame for eliminating state programs for children, the elderly, the disabled and the poor.

Good for Arnie. Only way to get anything done anymore is to stir up the hornets nest, and he seems to be doing it quite well. Hopefully they'll pay him(which means us) to shut him up so we can ease the budget issues.

I applaud the Governor for reminding those jackals in DC California is not simply their ATM.

Furthermore I would like for the Governor to let them know that California's deficit would be instantly wiped out if the $50 BILLION in California federal tax money ANNUALLY spent in other states was actually spent in California.

Furthermore, during Dubya's administration, the federal government took $55 Billion in annual spending out of the states and poured that directly into the DC Metro Area. California bore the brunt of those lost govt contracts.

And has anyone forgotten Bush Sr and all those military closures that he presided over--California lost by far the most.

Relationships are give and take, but the relationship between CA and DC is totally one-sided. they take and take and take and give us nothing in return, except grief.

And it's no secret that we've been without a west coast President since Reagan, and California got a lot better treatment under Reagan. Pity there aren't (m)any West Coast politicians that can win in a Presidential race. East Coast/Midwest blue bloods and Southerners don't give a crap about West Coast issues

I haven't... drive by closed and dilapidated military installations every day...

What, I can't for the life of my figure out is why so many cheered when the last patient was discharged from Oak Knoll military hospital and the base closing...

There where gleeful protesters at every base closing... the military spends a lot of money... at one time, a large amount went to Northern California...

Washington State was all too happy to embrace what the Bay Area kicked to the curb...

Californians budget problems are the result of years of fiscal mismanagement in California and Arnie is really just displacing blame.

At the same time, he brings up important issues. Federal spending should be more level, spending less in California forces higher tax rates on Californians to fund the same programs that a state that is receiving more federal dollars.

Its nice to see Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer support California though.... What Turkeys.....wait can't Arnie run for senate?

I'm sorry, what problems have they solved?

The wars rage on, we're still losing jobs, the foreclosure mess hasnt hit bottom yet, Iran and North Korea laugh at us while they build nuclear weapons.

The only problems they've solved is sheltering rich corporations and protecting them from going out of business. Im sure those rich execs appreciate the relief.

This Democrat(since 18yo) is of a good mind to withhold all future campaign donations until I feel like their actually accomplishing something.

Maybe if Californians stopped passing so many silly propositions, which cost money to enforce, you could save a few bucks. You know, like making sure chickens are nice and comfy!
