Tracy residents will now have to pay every time they call 9-1-1 for a medical emergency.

But there are a couple of options. Residents can pay a $48 voluntary fee for the year which allows them to call 9-1-1 as many times as necessary.

Or, there's the option of not signing up for the annual fee. Instead, they will be charged $300 if they make a call for help.

How stupid and embarrassing. Seriously, have we sunk this low?

In my town, they want people to "adopt a streetlight" to pay to keep the streetlights on all night long. The tax money I pay is obviously not enough to keep the streetlights on and the city is talking about turning off most of the lights at night.

So, if you're a criminal, come to my town in the middle of the night and help yourself!!

Colorado Springs turned off about 1/3 of its streetlights to cut costs. Keep an eye on what happens there next.

I had to call 911 for my daughter recently and I ended up getting a bill for $1400 from them. My health insurance plan might cover it, though. I'm not even in Tracy.

I've used 911 to report accidents before. I guess that'll have to stop if this happens where I live.

We've been paying the lighting and landscape tax for years in my city...

Quite ironic because the street I live on has about 25 homes and not a single street light or any landscaping

I report accidents more often than the average guy, and I always call the non-emergency police line. If you do that, eventually you'll have a plethora of different jurisdictions' phone numbers in your contact list on your cell phone.

The only trick is knowing which jurisdiction you're in (it isn't always obvious).

In California, calling 911 from a cell phone reaches the CHP. The only time I've ever called 911 is from a cell phone on the freeway so I figure the CHP is the right agency to reach. Even if its a dispatch center in Fresno, I'm sure they can get someone to the scene quickly.
