Wow, old thread! Berkeley is known for that actually. I'm only just now beginning to understand this whole "freeze" thing as it's mentioned all the time about Seattle. Having grown up in Berkeley, it just seemed normal to me.

It is by far, a better place for a professional who is working in the technology industry to live. The quality of life is much better here in Northern California than in Southern California. The unemployment rates should provide some validation to this.
