My husband wants to buy a tent online for under $300 that can fit our family of 5.
You should buy a tent that sleeps one or two more than you need. That way your not crammed in like sardines. Eureka makes good tents. I had a smaller 4 person version of this tent years ago and it was great. - https://www.amazon.com/Eureka-Copper.../dp/B00C37PR2O
The vertical sides make it easy to stand up and move around. Eureka tents are very well made too, so they'll last multiple seasons.
I have found out from past experience that any tent manufacturer that claims their tent "sleeps six" means "sleeps six midgets into group sex". I had three...count 'em...three tents over the years that "slept six". In a pig's eye. Not if you want any of those six people talking to each other once the camping trip is over....
I also had one that said "easily set up by one person". Suuuure, but only if that person has three arms and an extremely high threshold for frustration.
That link only went to the website, not the specific tent, so we have no idea.
That being said - $300 will buy you an OK tent for light seasonal use and car camping. If your interest is 4 season camping (able to withstand high winds and rain and snowfall) or hiking (need for light weight materials) then you have to shell out much more.
5 in a tent of any size, except those designed for circuses, are going to be cramped. Maybe look at 2 tents as an option and your children will probably get a kick out of a tent of there own.

My reaction exactly.
And don't forget, a couple people can probably sleep in the car.

1) don't buy specialty items online that you don't have experience of.
2) don't expect ANY tent to meet the needs of a large group.
2a) expect to end up with at least 2 tents
3) visit an REI store (or similar)
Eureka makes great tents, but I have a Coleman I bought at Walmart and IMHO it is every bit as good as Eureka. And yes, go over on the size....or plan for 2 tents as soon as your kids are willing/able to sleep on their own.
We have a giant LL Bean tent that we love. We have this one and it sleeps three (one being a 6yo) and a dog comfortably. It fits a double and a single air mattress and a dog crate even though it "sleeps six." We love it and have no complaints though.
