for me, traveling throughout the Rocky Mountain West and points East on the plains, WalMart parking lots were a viable option in a lot of towns. Especially in winter months when the public lands/NF's or state parks were inaccessible or closed for the season so they weren't available to camp out for the night.

Some stores allow it and some do not. Check with the store manager before you park.

Thank you suzy_q2010. We discovered that link too, and it should be shared.
We generally don't use Walmarts as campgrounds, but have used them to park in the back of the lots on rare occasions when campgrounds were full. Nice to know which ones tolerate it and which ones don't; the last thing we wanted was a knock on the door at 5:00am on vacation...

In cases where Walmart does not allow parking over night..........its the municipality that has passed a no over night parking by law. And its usually in response to complaints from residents of the community.

In my experience , the real offenders are the people who set up camp, with slides out. Dumping tanks and in general being pests. They screw things up for the rest.

XXX.

We have a Walmart here in Saint Mary's, Georgia just off I-95 at the Fl/Ga border and some nights it looks like an RV sales lot

Walmart has the big reputation for people parking/sleeping overnight but they're not the only ones who allow it. Cabelas, Home Depot, Lowes all let people do it where allowed by the cities - ask first of course. Casinos often allow it too.

Nope, never have. We’ve always managed to find RV parks right off the highways.

Walmarts are usually in urban areas and now that truckers use them... they are noisy throughout the night.

I prefer the 'other' options:
Crackerbarrel
Cabelas
Fairgrounds (~$5)
Hospitals (away from Emergency Room)
Harvest Hosts

There is an 'idea' list 1/2 page down here:

Traveling near Hydro-power dams?
Army Corp, Bureau of Reclamation, TVA and BPA have really nice campgrounds

I think about 4-5 times over the past nine years which was about 4-5 times to many for me. I will stick to a nice campground with full hookups
