I am going to have a 5 x 8 enclosed uhaul trailer for fifty miles of my trip it will be empty. Can you drive on highway with empty trailer?? I read there needs to be minimum wieght on tongue and got confused . Is there any precaution when driving empty trailer .

Yes, you can pull an empty U-Haul trailer on the highway. When you rent the trailer, U-Haul will sell you the proper hitch for that trailer.

As for pulling an empty, it's going to bounce more than a loaded one. Be aware that the wind will affect an empty more than a loaded one. Adjust your driving speed to whatever you feel gives you the best control. Pay attention to the road surface and avoid road breaks and potholes wherever possible, as they can bounce the trailer into the air.

Just be alert and get used to the feel of the trailer behind you, and you should be fine.

Thank you I already have a hitch and used once before empty for couple miles and noticed how loud and bouncy it was . Thanks for advice for highway.

Isn't the trailer empty when you hitch it up at the UHaul store and drive away>?

The minimum tongue weight is a percentage of the total weight of the trailer, usually around 10-12%, not a fixed XX pounds of weight. It should be fine empty. But by now you've probably already taken the trip and found that out.
