Deep woods off (DEET) does not effect Tics. It works great for mosquito's though.

It also does not work for black flies (common and horrid in Northern Michigan and Canada, probably elsewhere too). if your are in a black fly area during black fly season, you need to cover absolutely everything. They make broad brimmed hats with netting that cinches at your collar for this. A really heavy coat of mud will also keep them off as long as the mod stays on and thick.
