If combined, there will be only one country. There would be no such thing called "Canada". How does it benefit Canada is meaningless.
What's more important is how it affects people who currently live in Canada now - whether they are better off is the only thing that matters, isn't it.
As to bank bailing-out, the Canadian banks were bailed out too. Wasn't Air Canada bailed out a few times as well?
I don't like the idea of bailing out a private sector bank/firm. Next time it happens, we should make sure the big banks just go straight to hell. There would be short term pains, but that's the right thing to do.
If they did get bailed out, there should be a contract that obligates the banks to pay a certain percentage of their profit to the taxbase for a long period of time. Simply paying back the bailout money is ridiculous.

That's what I meant. How does JP Morgan help present day Canadians?

Sure ...
But not the the same extent as the American ones. I am not saying that RBC is better than American Banks. I am simply saying that you are replacing one broken system with another broken system.
Despite all its flaws, Canadian like/ want RBC ... they dont like/ want JP Morgan Chase.
Canadian will have access to a bigger job market, more options, not a good thing? Right now, computer science and electric engineering phDs have no place to fully use their knowledge and skills.
As to banks, the sheer exsitence of more banking options is good for us, no?
Canadians don't like JP morgan but like RBC, you mean those narrow-minded ones who care more about the nationality of a bank than products/service they provide? Do the same canadians use Iphones and Ipads? Drive Fords/GMs? umm, guess nationality of a computer doesn't matter what much any more? oh, wait, Canada doesn't produce them.
The whole idea of it gives me the shivers. NO, NO, NO, it should NEVER happen and hopefully and probably never would. The author of that articles got it all wrong.
It's like asking "Why not pour your glass of Glenlivet 21 yr old Scotch into this tumbler of Mountain Dew? You'd have a much bigger drink!"
except America has better science/techology, massive manufacturing industry, powerful military, cutting edge medical research, etc etc, and a higher GDP per capita, as well as vast natrual resources.
Your argument might apply when someone suggest Canada to merge with India.
Canada is not that superior, sorry.
