Hands down - Nelson, BC. An eclectic city with lots to see and do. Think draft dodgers' offspring and that about describes it. Driving through Nelson is like driving through the 60s.
Nelson BC. The hippy mecca of Western Canada (I know nothing about the East). A very artistic/spiritual community that was settled by draft dodgers from the states. The place is stereotyped as being a haven for spiritual types, artists, hippies, green freaks, and a lot of young people in general. Climate is incredible too.
lots of music - yes. its not the biggest city but on a "music per capita" basis, much better than most
spiritual feel - very much so
artistic - very much so
cosmopolitan - people are very open minded but if you are looking for ethnic variety, not a huge city
High employment - the only downside. tourism is huge though
Easy going - About as easy going as you will find in a city of its size
Hippies had a strong influence on the development of the local culture, but that view is a bit dated. It's too expensive for true hippies nowadays, there's just a few, struggling bohemian pockets on the east side and I'd associate them more with the hipster aesthetic. The hippies are old professionals now, and left their mark on the local culture with traditions like the widespread practice of yoga and environmentalist thought.
Do a Google image search of Montreal Tam Tams. It's a weekly event of drumming and dancing, with some mighty odd-looking people. If they're accepted, why shouldn't you be?
We have a plethora of smoke shops and organic food stores. Is that what you mean by hippie? Cops look the other way with weed. Is that what you mean? We have hippy hostels for travellers.
I think most of us are hippies at heart. You'll fit right in.
Lot's of music? You betcha. Lots of free shows.
Easy-going, artistic and cosmopolitan? Very much so.
Kensington Avenue in Toronto is straight outta the 60's.
