Some say that Tim Horton’s doughnuts as not being as good as they used to be, but haven’t given a better alternative.

I hope somebody does. Tim Horton's doughnuts are the only doughnuts I've ever eaten in Canada, and I wasn't all that impressed.

But there aren't great doughnuts in the USA, either. The doughnuts we got as kids from real, independent bakeries that made them from scratch just aren't around anymore.

Most donut chains are all pretty much the same crap. The best donuts I have had here were from an Italian bakery in Montreal. Bakeries are the way to go.

I've never been impressed with doughnuts from Horton's or any other doughnut chains. As mentioned above, the independent local bakeries are the way to go for really good doughnuts and other pastries. They are usually a bit more expensive than what the chains produce but you get what you pay for at the bakeries, they're definitely worth every extra penny. Plus there's more variety to choose from.

Krispy Kreme is good.

This place isn't in Canada but it has really good doughnuts. Mrs. Murphy's in Southwick, MA, out in the country.

It's true, you have to go to a bakery not a chain.

I'm Canadian and I don't love Horton's though it's probably considered a national treasure. Chain doughnuts are just not good. You have to live somewhere with a local shop.

Try the TimBits next time. All that goodness is compressed into the core.

Are you on LBI? (I’m from Jersey is why I’m asking)

Doughnuts are not the problem with Tims, it's the "coffee". To anyone in the downtown area, one place to get proper real coffee is Marche, located in the underground concourse at 181 Bay Street:

You might not see them too well, but there are two Franke automatic coffee makers located behind the cash register at the far left of the pic.
