So now the buzz is that USA wants to post American troops at the border because of covid-19. This is a ridiculous excuse. I think USA (Trump???) is getting far too paranoid for the good of diplomatic relations. What's next, wanting to post soldiers because of people getting ordinary head colds as an excuse?

Canada 'forcefully' opposed to U.S. idea of posting soldiers at border: Freeland

Quote:

WASHINGTON — Canada is "strongly opposed" to a proposal floated by the United States to post American soldiers near the border to intercept illegal migrants who could spread COVID-19, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said Thursday.

Freeland and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau separately confirmed a report first distributed by Global News that the U.S. has raised the idea of deploying its military within reach of the Canadian border under the pretense of protecting Americans from the novel coronavirus.......

He is thinking of doing that because travel makes spreading the disease more likely, and there are people illegally crossing in places other than regulated border crossings. Diplomacy has nothing to do with it. When the crisis is over, the troops would be withdrawn. He isn't trying to give Justin a heart attack or anything.

It is next to impossible to stop travel domestically. Our Constitution guarantees every American citizen the uninhibited right to occupy space on any public land anywhere on American territory. Raising the threat level to the level of martial law seems unwarranted here. But the borders provide a convenient way to have some regulation of travel in a perfectly legal manner. Restricting travel actually offers a bit of protection for people on both sides of the border.

I'd be surprised if this actually happens though. It is just being discussed, as are many other measures. We don't necessarily like Canadians, but they haven't been enemies for more than 200 years. They are tolerated cousins, by DNA and by proximity. If you've ever had your DNA analyzed by Ancestry.com, you know that you have plenty of cousins on both sides of the border.

Trump wants to keep Americans from leaving in droves looking for our healthcare.

No reasonable Canadian would consider going to the US with the mess they have now.

Nah. We’re after your Timbits.

And given the currency exchange rate today, we can afford a lot of ‘em.

The whole thing is ridiculous. Another distraction from Trump.

Putting the idea into Americans heads that Canada poses a threat to them with the Coronavirus is ironic, considering, it is the other way around.

The US numbers are climbing faster than Canada and it is they who are a threat to us.

Also, can someone explain why the death rate in the US for this virus is 4 per one million, and in Canada it is 1 per million?

As usual Trump gets it backwards:

Better keep an eye on those troops or they'll jump the fence themselves like 30,000 of them did once before when they were faced with something that scared them.

Why does Canada care what we do on OUR side of the border?

If its a waste of resources and money, that's for the US electorate to weigh in on.

It's not so much what you guys do on your side, but more the message it sends to Canada

I can understand the messaging factor, but its not something that is worth making strong public statements about as elected Canadian officials, I argue. We certainly aren't getting involved with purely internal Canadian affairs.
