Border closures have worked here. Only today at 12.01 am the border between Victorian and NSW reopened after months of closure. The closures and lockdowns in Melbourne have resulted in four weeks of no cases in that state.

I think people started to accept it when they saw the 700 plus cases a day start to decline. There were very few protests considering the length of the shutdown and the range of restrictions. I would have thought that Canadians were quite similar sociologically to Aussies and would accept that these measures.

The toll on health care providers
"One of Demers-Marcil’s ICU patients was among those who succumbed to the disease.

While he was on the phone informing the patient’s family, his photograph was taken, unbeknownst to him and posted to social media on Friday.

In the picture, Demers-Marcil is on his knees. One hand cradles his head while the other holds the phone to his ear.

“I’m not an artist,” he told CTV News Edmonton. “But I guess I was impressed by the emotion that the picture conveyed. Looking at it from a third-person perspective and forgetting it was me in the picture.”

I think Canadians would easily comply, but some provinces have asked people to voluntarily do the right thing rather than mandate new rules. That has created ambiguity and confusion about what is best. Does that mean returning to what we did in March-June, or does it mean carry on like we did in August?

If employees want to do the right thing by working from home, but managers decide the right thing is to work on site even though work from home is an option, employees cannot do what they think is right until the government steps in to govern with clear boundaries.

The linked story shows what can happen when people who did not qualify for CERB applied anyway. The government warned people every step of the way that the money would be issued immediately, but if it was fraudulently applied for, there would be consequences.

People applied for CERB online. The first question they had to answer was whether the only reason that they were out of work in April 2020 was due to covid. People on welfare knew the answer was no, but if they said yes and received the money, they must pay it back and their welfare would be terminated. Being out of work in April due to covid means they were fully employed until covid.
If we gave 9 million people each a million dollars, we'd have spent 9 million. We'd have saved 79 billion, 991 million dollars.

I think this is quite funny - but I have a degree in theoretical math and it's a brain twister for me today. I did well enough in my studies to go on to a masters and phd. However, I had a head bump in a car accident a couple of years ago and things haven't been quite the same since that day. I look at this and know there's an easy explanation, but today it eludes me. Hopefully tomorrow it will be clear. I always said that I can't do arithmetic (like taxes), so maybe that's the problem.

If 9 million people each receive one dollar, wouldn't that would be 9 million dollars?

9,000,000 x $1,000,000 = $9,000,000,000,000 = $9 trillion

I think most Canadians do accept and follow safety measures closely. The problem seems to be in certain areas (like where I live). From what I have heard from my friends back in Nova Scotia people are being cooperative, they haven't heard of any antimask groups or anything like that out there. No one complaining about communist take overs or any of that nonsense. No surprise their numbers are really low.

Glad to hear Australians are accepting and following safety regulations closely. Be safe out there.

Someone is missing some zeros, I think.

9,000,000 people each getting $1.00 is $9,000,000.00

9,000,000 people each getting $1,000,000.00 is $9,000,000,000,000.00

9,000,000 people each getting $8,888.88(to infinity) is about $80,000,000,000.00. When in doubt, cross out the zeros so:

80,000,000,000.00 divided by 9,000,000 is the same as 80,000 divided by 9.

Does that help? And I'm not trying to be bitchy. I just need to turn word problems into numbers or I totally mess up.

And it would be totally funny if I missed a zero or 2

Part of the problem in my part of BC is people not taking it seriously. Another part of the problem is how closely peoples lives and livelihoods are linked with the Yukon, the Territories and Alberta.

There are a lot of people that live in one of these places and work construction, forestry or oil & gas jobs in another.

Thank you! I knew something wasn't making sense - even for the government!
