Also, SW Ontario is similar to Michigan and Western Upstate NY in some ways as well culturally.

Terrace BC & Kitimat BC ;Rent average $ 400.00 to upper $ 700.00`s is base Rent and some even include your utilities (Heat ,Hydro) Some are even with Cable (Basic of course ); The clincher is trying to find a job, not many around. Food is just as expensive here as in Vancouver BC, which by the way is only a 22 hour drive or a 1:48 minute flight and this is`nt cheap, Average round trip with out pre- booking $1000.00. But these two little cities offer alot of out door activites, golfing ,fishing ,hunting, skiing, both salt & fresh water boating, camping, snow mobiling in winter, down hill ,cross country, and many many more.

We're talking about the boonies of northern BC here, akin to small town Alaska. Very pioneering in spirit. Not sprawling suburbia with mega malls, great job opportunities, or freeways, but very isolated places far away from pretty much anything.

Look at that map. Zoom right in, and then zoom right out.

Addition to cost and wage, you also have to measure up the job opportunities in Houston, which is a city larger than Toronto and a major hub for quite a few world leading energy companies and airlines, among others. Jobs in South West Ontario? They make cars for the US, and imagine what it is like now!

In sum, there is no city in Canada comparable to Houston in terms of low cost of living, plenty of jobs and high salary.

You may want to Google some Canada immigration sites to see what is required.
If a .net professional is anything like the tech support guys i get on the phone when i have a problem you may have a problem getting a similar job in Canada as most online tech and support questions are routed to India.
