Any area suspicious for melanoma needs to be excised --- completely removed --- by someone experienced in treating melanoma. It should not be shaved or frozen.

The areas that are frozen without being biopsied are the sun associated things called actinic keratosis. These are precancerous and pretty easy to diagnose.

If there is any doubt, the whole thing should be removed.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The usual spots (and the 100 or so) were all pre-cancerous AKs. They can become squamous cell carcinomas but they can be frozen. Anything already suspicious for actual cancer has to be removed completely.
