You need to be more aggressive. I understand that your dad does not need a referral, but the PCP would have indicated in the chart "Mr. X referred to Dr. Y". Get that name and call them and get first available appointment. Or, tell the office manager at the PCP office to get the appointment scheduled. If you wait for the oncologists office to call you will never hear from them.
That's ridiculous. Even if there is a wait to get into the oncologist's office, someone from his or her office should have called to take his information, and set up a consultation. You may want to get a little pushy and call the PCP's office yourself. Either A. someone at either the PCP's or the oncologist's office is dropping the ball, or B. the insurance company is dragging their feet to authorize the visit, in which case you or dad would want to call the insurance company and give them a swift kick.
It took me at least a month to get an appointment with an oncologist, but I was in no pain. I think when someone is in a lot of pain that should make a difference. At the least they should put them on a list to call if someone cancels.
I hate to say this, but you'll have more luck getting your dad to see the onc if you go through the "back door". An ER visit and his symptoms, along with his history, should get him admitted. Then the onc will be called in to consult and Voila! No one should be made to suffer because someone else fails to do what they took an oath to do.

^this^ yes. You better believe that's what I would do.
