"Fifty years ago, the U.S. Surgeon General released the first report on smoking and health. Since then, there have been an estimated 20 million deaths due to smoking. This online memorial honors those #20million people – spouses, mothers, fathers, children, sisters, brothers, friends, – who we have lost. I remember the S.G. message on the cigarette packs. Remember ads being removed from tv as well as ads for
beer and alcohol being removed. For quite a while now, advertisements for alcohol and beer have been televised again. I don't know when the S.G. warning was changed (I do remember the warning was modified) but now cigarettes have:
Surgeon General's Warning: Cigarette Smoke Contains Carbon Monoxide. What is up with that?

Carbon monoxide interferes with the ability of red blood cells to deliver oxygen to tissues. It attaches more tightly to the hemoglobin inside the cell than oxygen does.

Carbon monoxide poisoning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The ratio of carboxyhemoglobin to hemoglobin molecules in an average person may be up to 5%, although cigarette smokers who smoke two packs/day may have levels up to 9%."

Exposure to second hand smoke can increase carboxyhemoglobin levels, too.

Char, that story of your future mother-in-law is unbelievable! What a childish way to react. I used to smoke a lot too but I don't see what it would have hurt to hold off on ONE cigarette. Geez...
