President Obama Saturday asked Congressional leaders to “urge swift action” on legislation he called crucial to shoring up small businesses, and to averting “massive layoffs of teachers, police and firefighters.”
The plan is consistent. The strategy of the current administration is that private sector jobs do not matter, but all costs be damned when it comes to government jobs. Perhaps when the census workers are off the rolls, these "saved or created" jobs will fill the gap.
There is, justifiably, a lot of concern about US debt. A simple solution could be, cut spending by 25% in Medicare/Medicaid and Defense. Half of that would cover all interest payments and the other half would pay down the debt principle. Is this Country willing to do that?

The real solution to debt is increased growth. Real growth in private sector jobs increases tax flows to address debt issues. Simply cutting to allow funding for other uses does not promote growth and increases the debt.
As far as Defense spending, I'm sure a rational program of reductions in the neighborhood of ten percent would be handled without impairing defense objectives. As far as Medicare, a phase out of the program for younger workers makes sense with the added twofold benefit to them of 1) being able to fund their own health care through their labors and 2) giving incentives to work and produce. Their payroll deduction for this would be in two parts - the first for their own account and a second general portion for those who do not / cannot work. With respect to Medicaid - probably not much chance of reducing spending on this political hot potato.
How long can we keep printing money to stimulate the economy?we been going down this road since 2007.

All the above does is keep consumer spending numbers up to not rattle Wall st and investors,this is not creating production jobs and is not creating wealth?We should take our medicine now rather then later.
I never understood the idolization of teachers, fireman, and policemen. If the local government can't afford you, they can't afford you. In 2 years when that failulus bill is dried up, pass another one and forget about actually fixing the root cause of the problem.

First tax the hell out of them....then give them money...makes perfect sense doesn't it?
So revenue is down and the government is not getting money to pay government salaries and the answer is to print more money to pay government salaries ???

Federal tax revenues are down 15-20% and will only get worse.
You can either make up the shortfall by cutting or printing. We're going the printing route
