Just got what looks like a regular scheduled small rate increase (5 %) from my insurer USAA. They have a very good reputation in general for good rates and good claims handling service. Are there any comparable quality companies you would suggest I could seek a quote from?

Only real comparable to USAA's level of service/reputation is Amica. But they generally have higher rates.

I would look at AMICA, the Hartford, Cincinnati Insurance, and Auto Owners.

Don't let anyone tell you something like "Progressive is just as good". Its not.

You were not an officer in the military correct? My father was, his insurance is way better then mine is with USAA because of this. He gets things I can’t and other insurances don’t do. I have friend who owns a big personal injury law firm who sues insurance companies all day. Someone asked on Facebook what are the best insurance companies, he said USAA and one other kinda weird named were the only two he’d recommend.

They love Flo, because they make a lot of money from them.

The usual suspects — State Farm, Geico, Country Financial, Allstate, and an independent agent who will quote Progressive, Travelers, Nationwide, and a handful of others.

This assumes that you're still in Illinois.

1. Visit any local insurance agency.
Have an agent - one that carries multiple insurance companies - obtain/compare costs.

2. Visit a local auto body shop and ask the owner/manager what insurance company is the easiest to work with concerning car accident repairs.

My husband was a Navy officer for 3 years only (during the Vietnam era - didn't see action): Does this mean he can get cheaper insurance than our Liberty Mutual? USAA is good quality insurance? Hmm

I don’t know what the requirements are to get in or if you had to sign up when active or not? It’s well worth trying. I got in due to my father being in, your non military kids can get it because of that.
