So over the last several months, I have noticed a couple of things that my mother has done that are concerning. She is going to see the neurologist next month, so hopefully he can shed some light on what is going on. Worst case scenario she is in the beginning stages of dementia or worst case scenario, she is trying to get attention.
She definately seems to suffer from memory loss, lack of comprehension and rationalization. But I was cleaning her room last week because she has not been, and found 2 bags of trash in the top of her closet and a dirty bowl and spoon. Makes me wonder what else she is hiding. I know she is depressed and I know depression in the elderly can mimic dementia, I also know her personality is one that needs a lot of attetion, all I can say is April can't come sson enough for me, I need to know what I am dealing with in regards to her.
My mom gets cranky and weird when she has a UTI. Could that be a factor with your mom?
Just so you know, UTI's in 'seniors' can be life threatening.
I'd never known this before - seems impossible - but it's very true. UTI's help to confuse - cause memory loss - agitate - so do keep that possibility in mind. I won't go into specifics about how to tell but, be sure to check it out.
Good luck!
Yes, I agree - have your mom's urine checked for a UTI. Strangely enough, sometimes in the elderly, there are not the usual symptoms of a UTI - fever, burning, frequent urination - but the UTI can still be present and can wreak havoc on their mental state. This happened with both my mother and my MIL.
If she does not have a UTI, then I would have her DR. give her a full physical exam to maybe find out whats going on!
We will be addressing this with her doctors in the next several weeks.
