It's actually not a terribly uncommon injury for cats - especially as they age. However very active cats can take a hit to the knee as well. It's jut that it's so often see in dogs (particularly small dogs) that it gets over looked in cats. I swear I'm counting the days until one of mine blows a knee
I know the surgery is pretty expensive - depending on your particular area and vet, I'd bank on about $2500 if he didn't give you a figure right off.
Honestly though, I don't see where you have too many options here. Did your vet happen to let you in on what type or grade of dislocation (luxation) your kitty has? That makes quite a difference. And if he/she expects any arthritis to be involved yet or any hip involvement? Unless you have a grade 1 (least severe) there is very little chance it's going to heal up on it's own. And obviously your girl is in quite a bit of discomfort. On the other side - a joint surgery for an 11yr old cat is difficult and the recovery is not as easy - though on a whole cats heal from amazing things.
This should help you with some basic information on the condition if you are unsure. At the very least I think you are going to have a tough decision to make, or a rough recover road ahead of you. Best of luck to you and Ella.
She has been fine , I did notice some slight limping at times but not so bad. I just thought of it as a little arthritis
Same thing with my 11-year-old girl, the vet -thinks- it's -probably- arthritis, but it isn't difinitive. I have her taking 1 cap glucosamine/condroitin kitty sprinkles on her morning half-can, and another cap sprinkled on her evening half-can.
Her limping is not -quite- as frequent now, she -seems- more interested in activity but she's still spending most of her time at rest. Also, when she does have a limping "episode" it's not as profoundly severe. It only lasts a couple of seconds, and that hasn't changed since the onset. But whereas before it looked like she was totally spasming her muscle up, now it looks more like just an uncomfortable limp. And still only lasts a couple of seconds, and then she walks just fine again.
So IF it's arthritis, the sprinkles are working. If it's an injury, it seems to be healing. Either way, she's doing better. Still not at top performance level but she's not breaking my heart with her caterwauling anymore, so that's a good sign!
I just got home from the vet. Ella is only 11 years old.
She has been sleeping so much and limping I thought it was arthritis.
The vet says it is very uncommon in cats. He put her on steroids and buprenorphine 0.5 mg
He says to keep her in a place where she cannot jump. I am going to put her in the back bedroom where there is nothing there.
He took her blood work to see if there was anything else wrong with her
I will find out the results tomorrow.
He says surgery is expensive , well I already knew that.
I dont know just feeling terrible for Ella.
She lost a pound and a half, she dont eat as much and sleeps very much
I dont have the means for an expensive surgery
Oh I'm so sorry to see this! The buprenorphine and steroids will help her feel better, though she'll be a bit stoned from the pain meds. The steroid will help reduce inflammation.
Remember that the buprenorphine is squirted only into the mouth and absorbed there, don't try to squirt it down her throat, it is meant to be absorbed through the mucus membranes in the mouth.
Vet left a msg Ellas blood test came back..she is anemic and he wants to do more tests to find out why.
I didnt mention she has lost 1 pound in the last month or so. The vet put that towards stress because of the knee pain. I did too and eating less
He said organs look good but I am afraid to say now she has that drawn look like my cat Molly did when she had kidney failure.
I will let you all know Thank you everyone
