I recently purchased a very nice purebred cat and he will be indoors 100%.
I am thinking of having him chipped out of paranoia incase he would ever accidentally escape out the door during his lifetime, worst case scenario .
I used to chip my dogs myself, I just have no idea if cats are chipped. He is going into be neutered and I think it would be a good time while he is knocked out. Anyone chip their cats? Are there any health considerations such as cancer at chip sites in cats?
I've been chipping since 2004. I hadn't worried about Lily getting out as she was terrified of the out of doors. But after losing my home in Hurricane Charley........chipping sounded like a great idea in case of natural disaster.
My boy kittens, Smudge and Bennie will be chipped when they are neutered early this fall.
I wish I could get them some kind of GPS chip. Wouldn't that be great?
I've heard that there is such a thing, and it enables you to "track" your cat via smartphone.
As for the OP's question - ideally what you want to do is keep a collar and tags on your cat. But good luck with that. Both of my "grrrrlz" are chipped, and that's their only form of ID. Seteria managed to lose her collar, with name and phone number, inside of 15 minutes. Blaliko growled and struggled until I gave up even trying to put one on her. And with the number of incidents wherein she's stayed away from home for 3-8 days I think she's taking advantage of this by visiting houses with food on the porch for strays, if not actually scamming from people outside our immediate neighborhood who are none the wiser. (She never fails to scoot right to the "feeding station" upon returning home, but after 19 years with Weasie I know all about the uncanny stomach capacity of domestic felines. )
My Kitty Katty came chipped when I adopted him from a rescue. I just had to change over the information with the company. When we adopted Charlie, we got him chipped when he was neutered.
I think it is a good idea even though they are both indoor cats. You never know what could happen.
Yes, all of ours are chipped. When our Tucker (now RB) slipped out of the house unseen last November, it was a comfort to know he was chipped in case someone turned him in to a shelter. (I found him 11 days later, thankfully.)
While I know there is a remote chance of cancer or the chip migrating a little, I still think it's a worthwhile thing to do, even though our cats are 100% indoors.
Never chipped any of my cats. I probably should since Elvira is an escape artist but she never strays far from home and always comes home.
