What beautiful cats, Gizmo! Looks like they enjoyed being together.

What's funny about my 8 pound cat is that she's actually kinda, well, round and rolly-polly. She is shorter than most cats - shorter body, legs, tail, everything - than most cats, but her bone structure feels heftier &, frankly, she's probably just a little bit fatter than she should be. She has trouble jumping up on our bed by herself. The good thing is we never have to worry about her jumping up on the kitchen countertops!

Here is my Millie kitty giving me a very suspicious look. I took this photo about 12 hours after we brought her home for the first time, so I guess she had good reason to be suspicious.

Thanks... yeah, they were best buddies for the 3 years they lived together. And as you can see, they both shared a fascination with the great outdoors - LOL. Unfortunately we lost Simon to a brain tumor last month (there's a thread about it on the Rainbow Bridge forum), which actually may have contributed to his large size. But even without the illness factored in, he obviously had a MUCH larger frame than Jasmine!!

Just like people, they/we all have a different "healthy weight." For instance my sister, who's built like our petite mother, looks chubby at anything over 120 lbs. (she weighs about 110 now, even after having a baby)... whereas I was "blessed" with my dad's larger body type, and looked anorexic when I got down to 135, which I only achieved through unnatural means. Not to get off-topic, but that's why those BMI charts are a bunch of hooey. Anyway, as long as you're not feeling ribs or excessive fat, the kitty should be fine!

P.S. Your cat is absolutely beautiful... love the expression too, hehe.

Default Munchkins

I realize I am about 3 years too late in my reply to this but as to the question of munchkin cats: I own a beautiful White munchkin named Ruby, she is my little sunshine. I just wanted to point out that not all small dogs were bred to be small for a purpose, almost all toys were bred specifically to be lap dogs for the wealthy. Obviously I have no issues with othe people finding my munchkin cat "creepy" but from all of the info I have gotten about munchkins they are not only very cute, but also have great personalities, make great pets for young chilrden and they also dont have to worry about any of the spinal and joint problems that the dogs of shorter stature, such as the Dachsund and Corgi, have dealt with. So in a way the short cat is a healthier breed than any of the shorter breeds of dogs. Also their range of motion is not as limited as some people think, they run fast and can still jump to certain heights (but who doesnt love a cat that wont jump onto your counters and tables all the time). I guess it is because I am so in love with my little Ruby that I wanted to reply to this.I have owned a few cats and none of them have been as sweet or as adorable as she is...
Sorry, I cant seem to get pics posted but if you'd like to see my Ruby here is the links:

Have a good day everyone!

I have to speak out in defense of the Munchkins as well. The breed was started back in La. about 15-20 years ago...and was developed as the Perfect Apt. cat. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell these guys, they weren't suppose to be able to climb or jump. These little guys are the perpetual kitten! Always look little. My daughter owns a Munchkin cattery...and believe there is nothing creepy about these guys. Meet Suri..one of her females: Why aren't there 2 - 3 pound cats? They miniaturized dogs - why not cats?-chris-jim-visit-11-08-001.jpg

We have a cat with mystery health problems who is only around 3 pounds at the age of 9 months. But other than that.... why?

Quote:
3 pound cat would be the perfect pet for apartment dwellers, people with arthritis and rheumatoid diseases who can't lift much, elderly people, etc.
A 12 pound cat is fine for those things too. I've had no problems living in apartments with 12 pound cats. If I was elderly, I couldn't bend over to pick up my 3 pound cat, so I'd sit down and pat my lap and my cat would jump onto it, the same as my 12 pound cat would do.

When are we humans going to realize just how icky it is that everything, right down to breeding cats (and dogs) in an overpopulated world, is all about titillating us?? Why does human amusement take precedence over the fact that 12 pound cats are being killed every day in our country?

I'd certainly never go along with breeding "miniature" cats but would advise that here in the Caribbean the cats are MUCH smaller and lighter than their stateside counterparts and this may well be an indication of climate, as another poster from Florida pointed out. As used as I was during my years in Connecticut where LARGE cats abounded and to whom I was accustomed, I'm so used now to the lithe and much smaller felines here that when I see pictures of fat furries I just start laughing! All mine are rescues with many a story to be told. I'm not well-versed in posting pictures here but we have a four-footed gallery at Toad and Tart - Homepage and you can see my kids on that to see the difference. Cheers!

If people can miniaturize dogs, which I know they can because I own a 3 pound yorkiepoo, why hasn't someone developed a tiny cat? It seems like such a no-brainer. A 2- 3 pound cat would be the perfect pet for apartment dwellers, people with arthritis and rheumatoid diseases who can't lift much, elderly people, etc.

i saw something a few months back.... on animal planet i think, about what i thought was munchkin kitties..... but these cats legs were not just short, but were deformed as well, actually sort of flipper like from what i recall ..... now THOSE were creepy.... and they were bred to be that way .... wish i could remember what they were, because based on the pics of the adorable munchkins posted here, they were definitely not munchkins.......
