I have been lulled into not worrying about this because, well, for Amber's first several years she lived in apartments which didn't have en-suite washer/dryer. So she'd never seen one. Now here at the house it's downstairs but it's closed off in its own little room that we keep closed. She has been in there some but never moved to get in the dryer or stay in the room very long. As soon as either of us are done with whatever in the room we shoo her out of there (in the rare case that she's actually in there) and shut the door. The dryer also stays closed when not in use (the light would be on otherwise so that has trained me if nothing else). I tend to leave the washer (top-loading) open so it can air out and not start smelling, but I'd never miss a cat getting in there (first thing for washing is looking in then turning on water, no clothes go in until a bit later). She can't likely jump from floor to washer/dryer height anymore anyway.
Of course someday with another cat this may all be different....
The same thing happened to Scotty! Luckily, my daughter heard the thumping and the bell on his collar and let him out right away. He staggered around drunkenly for a bit, but then he was fine. He had a thing for laundry - he'd cozy up in the clothes hamper and linen closet, too. He''s passed away several years ago, and we miss him. Luckily, this dryer mishap hasn't happened with our new kitties, but I don't use my dryer much anymore since we put up a clothes line outside.
My Pippin got a ride in the dryer once. I started it and went to another room. Luckily he yowled loud enough for me to hear and I was able to cool him down on my own. Poor baby. He's fine but to this day I feel guilty about it. We just moved and I am ecstatic to have a separate laundry room now. We keep the door closed and the cats are not allowed in. Of course that means they run in at every chance but they are also chased out right away. And the dryer door is kept closed at all times. I'm working in the ICU at my animal hospital now and I think I've become even more paranoid seeing all the crazy ways animals can get into trouble.
Happened to one of our cats years ago. Loud thumping, I opened the door and he jumped out. Never went in there again.
