With it's hearing gone, he will have to rely completely on your facial expressions and body language to read situations - this may stunt the bonding! ...or prolong it.
What a sweetie! What a face! I'm sure he'll be just fine.
My cats hear "breakfast" and "treat" but they don't hear "no" or "down". I thought Cookie was deaf when she first came to live with us -- she just didn't respond to our voices or to other noises -- until the first time I turned on the vacuum cleaner with her in the room.
Mr. Fuzzy is gorgeous! I have known people who have had deaf cats and the cats have led a long and happy life. Like the others have said, most cats have selective hearing anyway. Once he knows your household routine, you won't even notice that he can't hear.
Most handicapped cats live more comfortably under a companion.
Twix my black kitty has no sense of smell, and can not use her nose. She wouldn't EAT if it weren't for the other kitties upholding the routine that she follows, and leads a happy life following them around for example.
Have you thought of getting another small one that isn't deaf, to show her the ropes and help her?
Different handicap of course...but there is a great book out called "Homer's Odyssey", about the life of a blind cat. It is a wonderful book, that will make you laugh, as well as cry. But shows just how resilient these little guys can be and how they can overcome any obstacle. Homer's Odyssey -- An Unlikely Tale About a Blind Feline - Paw Nation
When my Bella first came to us, who is an all white cat, we thought she was deaf. Are you absolutely certain your kitty is deaf? Has a professional confirmed this?
If this precious angel is deaf, he has come into your life as a teacher. You will have to find different ways to communicate with him, and he with you. Cats are a lot smarter then even we know, but do give it time. Over time, you will be amazed at what you have learned, and how much you are capable of loving this kitty. There are no accidents in life......only lessons in love. The Universe will find any way possible to teach us these lessons, and that includes introducing a beautiful furrbaby to you. You have just begun an adventure. Relax, don't think too much, feel and hear your intuition, and enjoy this beautiful angel and what he has to offer you.
He can and will over time, learn hand signals, simple ones. I do not have a deaf baby and never have but I know people who have. Simple gestures he can learn and like someone else said, vibrations. These babies are a lot smarter than we "hoomans" think they are. He will also teach YOU things. just keep your mind open and try to understand what he is trying to tell you.
Oh, I forgot to tell you I have a handicap baby too, she has CH (Cerebellar Hypoplasia) and I know from my personal experience what these fur babies can teach us and they do not realize they are different. Only 'Hoomans" see them as handicaped.
I have a vets appointment for 4pm so the vet will confirm my suspicions - but it's pretty obvious that he can't hear... but I'll get the vet to check too anyway. No problem.
He's also getting his first vaccination today. And he is getting his own carrier too. Hope he likes it.
