I just saw that Kate was given Diana's sapphire engagement ring. Given the history...I don't think that's what I would have chosen.....It is a lovely piece of jewelry though...
The ring was estimated to cost about $40,000 in 1981? and now is valued at $500,000.
Jewelers are flooded with orders for similar rings, again.
'Most customers can't afford an exact copy of the royal ring. The sapphire alone is worth about $300,000 retail, and the whole ring about a half-million dollars, Arnstein estimated.'

I don't think the monetary value was the issue of those objecting to his passing it along to his future bride as her engagement ring. Given the circumstances for which it was presented to Princess Diana(lies, misleading her, sadness) it seems a bit creepy.

Yep...I wouldn't want a ring that the entire world now knows was presented under duress, without love (when in fact the giver was in love with someone else all together) and which ultimately ended sadly (divorce) and tragically (death)...
I agree the ring thing is a little strange, but I heard him say that he thought of it as a way to involve his mother even though she isn't here. I think his intentions are good.

After all William and Harry have been through---the airing of intimate details of both parents' lives and more--I thought it was a nice gesture, a way to honor his mother. Several commentators have said that William is protective of Kate and wants to avoid some/ a lot of the complications that his mother faced when she became a member of the Royal Family.

yes...I heard that too...and I can see that but still.. I could see as a wedding gift... but, me personally, I just wouldn't want to have that as an engagement ring...

Starting a new tradition would have been my preference. Knowing little of the traditions of the Royal Family, I suppose the decision was made after careful deliberation.
A few years ago there was considerable discussion in a forum about when William might become king. This might have been prior to the marriage of Charles and Camilla---I can't recall all that was said. Some thought that Charles might be skipped over and that William would succeed Queen Elizabeth. Since there has been no recent speculation of this it must have been conjecture.
I hope William and Kate have many years of less intense scrutiny than his parents.
at least I wasn't the only one wondering about this.
