Was there a strategic reason why MJ's children wore masks in public? There are very few people, even those critical of Michael, who say he wasn't a loving father. It's not at all strange that Diana Ross was named as secondary guardian for the children. Diana has raised five well adjusted children and is used to dealing with all the problems associated with raising children of celebrities.
Clip:
... Michael was truly afraid of kidnapping. But also, Brown notes, there was a strategy: If the kids wore masks when they were with Jackson, they could go safely unmasked when they weren't with him.
...He detested the media interest in whether he looked like his children," says Boteach, the rabbi. "I think that was another concern. Those rumors were hurtful to them."
...Still, for many people, the hardest thing to get past about Jackson's parenting style was those facial disguises. Geller, for one, is convinced the family saw it as a game. "It was a private joke on the media between Michael and the kids -- the kids loved it," Geller says. "That's what Michael told me."http://www.salon.com/wires/ap/entertainment/2009/07/04/D997IGB01_us_michael_jackson_the_father/print.html

Jackson was loving and attentive father, many say - Salon.com (http://www.salon.com/wires/ap/entertainment/2009/07/04/D997IGB01_us_michael_jackson_the_father - broken link)

"But those who've witnessed the family up close paint a brighter picture: a trio of engaging, intelligent, well-adjusted youngsters who adored their father. A father who, despite his eccentricities and the terrible controversy that surrounded him in later life, lived for his children and tried to make their lives as normal as -- well, as normal as Michael Jackson could."

^^^ - somehow, this goes together with my instincts, with how I always perceived him, beyond his appearance and eccentricities - he was a normal man in private, loving his kids, modeling his love as opposition to the tyranny he experienced himself as youngster.

Those were my perceptions as well.

I think it was just to keep the freak show going. Why are there pictures of them lately not wearing masks? I thought it was creepy in the Brashir doc when he had that thin green scarf over Blankets face while shoving a bottle into his mouth and the kid starts crying. For gods sake man maybe don't show your kid on TV at all.

NBC ran a show on him last night saying he really perpetuated the freak rep he got all on his own. MJ himself provided a rag mag with the picture of him in the hyperbariac chamber and told them to use the word "bizarre" in the story they would write. He started to grab his crotch in the 80's to get attention and revamp his image into a "Bad" boy, hence that song.
He did so many things to keep negative attention on himself.

He would wonder why people would gossip about the looks of his children when we could clearly see through the scarfs they were white and that he dyed the boys hair blond even as young toddlers?

He continued to deny his many plastic surgeries and pretend to have a skin conditon when we know he simply used a melanin blocker and bleached his skin. Give me a break he insulted alot of peoples intellligence It's too bad he didn't really see the man in the mirror. He was actually a good looking young man at one time. Well I guess all his antics over the years provided the public with some good fodder.

Yeah, all that falsetto yipping and yapping, crotch-grabbing and pelvic-thrusting really took on sinister overtones after the molestation trials, I must say.
He was in his 40s by then; perhaps he could've amended his act.
Or maybe he did, and the things I was seeing were from the distant past. Who knows.
It's impossible to tell his age, since he got that plastic face.

What does this post have to do with MJ as loving father? You're off topic.

Mothers put blankets over their kids when breastfeeding, is it freaky to you, too?

This sells. Madonna virtually performed sexual acts/masturbation in her concerts. At 50 now, she is with a 23 year old. Why don't they take her kids from her?? And even allow her adopt more kids?? Maybe because there is a difference between art and reality? Lady GaGa shoots fire from her bustier, she's virtually naked... Playboy! Why don't they take kids from mothers who pose nude there?? How about artists painting distorted human beings and monsters??? They must be terrible parents?

What is your business? Are you as nosy with children of your neighbors?

Denying plastic surgery is the name of the game in Hollywood and LA. Do you think you know exactly who did and who didn't do it? Even those that you know did it, do you think you know exactly how many?

Bad analogy. First of all it was a see thru scarf...second if you don't want the public to see your kids face no reason to put them front and center on TV. Has nothing to do with breastfeeding

Jackson made it our business, when he showed his mummified children to the world. They obviously hated it and begged to be let out of the shrouds...evidenced by thier lack of head wraps currently.

You're comparing apples and oranges here. There is good plastic surgery and there is bad. Jackson clearly with all his wealth didn't get his monies worth. When you are doing it to completely alter your appearance you need psychological help and the Drs. should have refused further surgery.

I don't think most people think he would make father of the year by any stretch of the imagination.

No reason? You think MJ got up one day and decided to put his children on TV? Or was it the incessant hounding of the papparazzi? Know why Britney Spears went insane?

Letterman's scare of his son's kidnapping ensured that you will have to try hard to know how his son looks like. Stakes on MJ's children's heads were much higher. It was easier to conceal the kids when they were small. Growing up, they couldn't be denied the simple pleasure of walking around with their parent. The simplest solution was to conceal their faces. What is hard to understand there?

Celebrities deal differently with degree of exposure of their children, but I'm sure in all cases they are paying for security services.

There are SO many examples of bad plastic surgeries, it's not funny. The woman who looks like a cat. Priscilla Presley. Should we deny Priscilla her mother's and grandmother's rights? Why oh why she was pressing to have her mummified into a perpetual scary 20-year old state? How about plastic boobies so many women have now? I don't understand how bad plastic surgery makes a bad parent.
