Android browser - selecting text (application)

On my Android stock browser, you select text by pressing and holding on the text and when you let go, there will be two green markers for the beginning and ending of the selection. You can move the markers. Three buttons also appear, including Copy.

My question is, you can say Menu > More > Select text, but what does it do? I can select the text as above without doing this on the menus.

I was hoping for a Select All Text, but there is none. (I have an older Android 2.3.5 by the way.)

Is selecting text very different with later Androids?

Depends wholly on the application, who it was written by and if it was skinned or modified by the manufacturer.

If you have a menu option, you can probably select a single word with a tap or drag a sentence to select the whole thing. Why not just try it?
