Well no one "explain" all that ....

The man at the apple store just said he would swap it out

It certainly would have. Using forensic software to undelete stuff from a formatted iPhone is beyond the scope of most people.
@Syndney123: Swapping a SIM does nothing about your info on the phone.

This is a non story....

Right! No method apart from physically destroying the device and its storage is 100% foolproof - data may still be recoverable with the right tools.
I kept all my phone's. Those few bucks from resale are not worth the headache.
Some of the newest phones can be used as an indoor camera for surveillance purposes.
And here are few ideas how you can repurpose an old phone:

The first time I was told I had to turn in my broken phone, or else I would be billed $500 for the replacement, I smashed it into tiny pieces with a hammer.

They sent me a refurbished one that had everything from the previous person on it. Her contact's, photos, even her signed in email, facebook, BOA account, etc. I didn't need any passwords to view them. I decided to call the first person under her "frequently contacted" list that was in her contacts to let her know, then I told the cell company I wanted a brand new, not refurbished phone.

There was no activation, setup or anything when I received that phone. Nothing of mine was even transferred to that phone.

Maybe I should have but I didn't even think to call the media about it.

The next phone I broke had a black screen and I didn't trust that they would even be able to prove they wiped it so I refused to turn it in. Same threat that I was going to be charged but I never was.

I also had an issue with another company. It's a shared account and when I upgraded my phone they put the other phone (under that account) backed up info into my phone. I had access to everything they had on their phone.

It really doesn't get much easier.

In this case, how badly do you need $11 that you wouldn't just hang onto it.
I agree if it's only a few bucks.

But sometimes it is impossible to know if you actually reset your phone if the screen is black or broken. They say you can by using the side buttons but I know it doesn't always work. My lock screen is a personal photo and should have been deleted if that kind of reset works. But, my super smart BF was able to hook my phone up to my laptop and screen shot what I couldn't visually see on the phone screen.

My personal photo was still there so I knew the phone wasn't able to be reset by me so I refused to turn it in.

The cell phone representatives are trained to tell you that you HAVE to... No you don't. They would rather keep a good customer instead of losing you over a used/broken cell phone.

BTW, I am always polite even when I have to be assertive.

OMG, that's funny! I tried to use that as a temp password before and the account wouldn't accept it!

We'll try "Password" for password... Lol

I noticed that, thankfully some secure websites request now more complicated passwords to login - with caps, numbers and symbols. I guess, they try to protect those clueless...

Seriously wish that this was more common knowledge because I have been asking other people about this and apparently I am not the only clueless person out there
