My wife and I now live in the DFW area of North Texas where every thunderstorm in the spring brings the threat of tornados and hail. While tornados threats are scary, the hail is worse to me because it is wide spread and does major damage to vehicles and roofs. We have experienced many hail storms that have caused roof and vehicle damage.

Does the Charleston area experience a lot of hail?

Also, can someone give me an estimate of what homeowners insurance cost there based on a $200,000 property value?

Thanks

We get hail on rare occasions but not very big and not usually widespread either. Its been a while since I have seen any.

The really big hailstorms come from supercells, which are most common in the great plains states and provinces. You don't get supercells very often on the east coast because of the geography. For big hail to form, you need the powerful updrafts found in a supercell.

Hail is few and far between here. You won't see many hail storms.

It isn't the norm but you just never know. A couple months ago we had to replace our roof in our Charlotte area home because of racketball sized hail (one storm). It was a fluke but things happen. Our home was only 7 years old so it was a huge bummer. Fortunately, we were down here with both cars visiting the Charleston area when it happened so our cars were spared, not such good news for our neighbors.

I imagine since the house we live in now hasn't had a roof replaced in a LONG time, that the hail storms are just as infrequent here. Paying a deductible was a lot less financial strain than a new roof will when we have to replace this one. We didn't need any additional hail damage to have our insurance policy cover it.

Where you live will make a difference in your home owners insurance. We live enough inland so that hurricane insurance wasn't an issue but it can be difficult to get hurricane insurance if you are in the zone.

In reference to your homeowners insurance cost question, I paid about 200k for my home and have no "extra" coverage and it runs about 1100 per year. I live in Summerville in a 6 year old home.
