I'm about to move into a house in Goose Creek, so I called to get the electric turned on and they told me I would have to pay a deposit of $360, thats insane. Is that the norm in Berkeley county/Goose Creek houses? She said the deposit could have been waived if I had a credit score of like 750. Is there any way around this?

This is the norm...not just in this area, either. They often base your deposit amount on your credit score. They are charging you a deposit amount based on how much they feel you are a risk for non-payment. It's not fair, but that's how a lot of the utility companies are doing it now. Our utility companies in NC did the same thing. Landlords do it a lot, too. Our deposit amount on our (temporary) rental here was based on our credit score.

You can request your old Electric Company to fax/send a letter of 'Good & Ontime payment' to the new Electric Company.

Often that will work to waive the Deposit.

Also is your sign up for the AutoPayment they might also waive it.

I was told basically the same from SCE&G (as well as water providers, cable providers, etc)...if your credit score isn't high enough, you will be charged a deposit.

I have no idea how much SCE&G would have charged...I wasn't charged a deposit.

I had the same issue with a power company when I bought my first house. I had no credit at the time and was going to have to pay a deposit. Luckily, they allowed a guarantor so I wouldn't have to pay that. The guarantor was able to be released after a certain period of time.

I wonder what SCE&G's criteria is to have the deposit waived? I didn't have to pay one either.

SCE&G runs your credit when you apply for a new account....it is based on your credit score. We didn't have to pay a deposit, either.

I meant if their credit score waiver was lower than Berkeley Electric.

I didn't have to pay any deposit last year going through SCE&G in Charleston county.
Berkeley Electric told me that if you dont qualify for a waiver (have around 750 credit score) you have to pay a $360 deposit no matter if your score is 500 or 650, it's a flat rate deposit. They said the amount is 2x a monthly payment.
