Hello,
I will be visiting Charleston next weekend to see if it is a city I would like to move to. Since I don't get much vacation time, I will only be there a couple of days. Can anyone give me a few tips regarding an area I could stay in, things I should see etc. to get a feel for the city? Also I will be traveling alone since my sister bailed on me so if you could suggest a nice (but not expensive) area for a hotel that would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Hi there. We love the Post House in Mount Pleasant. Very central - can walk to Shem Creek. Restaurant on site. Lovely, safe area, great staff & food & very reasonable prices.
If you're wanting to stay IN Charleston city (not sure if you are thinking of living in the city or in surrounding towns) we've stayed at the Governor's House Inn. Great location, and the cheapest place we found to stay in Charleston. Charleston is much more expensive to stay than Mount Pleasant.
Look here for a list of motels in Mt Pleasant at Patriot's Point, which is right across the bridge from Charleston - lots of good deals, especially if you book on line.
Thank you for the help! While both of those Inns are wonderful, they were a little out of my price range for this trip. I ended up in Patriots Point. Thanks again!
You're fortunate, because you'll be here for the last weekend of Restaurant Week. So, you can get some decent 3-course meals for $20/$30/$40.
Word of advice: go into the grocery stores (they're expensive, too, in my book), check the restaurants that offer the cuisines you like and plan to do a lot of driving around in the neighborhoods.
Check out Wagener Terrace, North Central & Hampton Terrace - all northern peninsula neighborhoods. Anything South of the crosstown (aka Septima P Clark) will be dotted with college kids (which means will be a bit louder in the nights/weekends during the school year). Riverland Terrance and Laurel Park on James Island are good spots that are still reasonably priced, tho getting up there (but you get a lot more bang for your buck). West Ashley's Byrnes Downs and Avondale are also big spots right now. Mt Pleasant can be nice, but it's either too suburb-y for me to give you an opinion or an insane price range of Old Village.
Good luck!
