I am sick of them building more and more houses and apartments but not enough stores, roads and restaurants to go with it!
I grew up in Georgia but I've been here over 20 years. I can understand your point of view. There are things I loved and still love about Mt Pleasant (safe, clean, the schools, friendly, etc). While I grew up in the country, suburbia was a great choice while my daughter was in school. Now that we're empty nesters, it's time for me to get back to the country. I get uncomfortable with so much congestion, whether that comes from more developments or more business. Like I said, it's just time for me to move on.
I will say that I am a huge advocate of small business and support it with my wallet. My only concern with adding the big box stores in Mt P is the threat is may have towards small businesses. That's one thing I think Mt Pleasant always did well - the enormous number and variety of small businesses. My hope is that they continue to flourish in Mt P.
Wow, so much snark. Look, I'm leaving Mt Pleasant and going to the country because I know they won't stop coming. To me, that's the solution. Do I lament what's become of the place I once enjoyed so much? Sure. But it's coming whether I want it to or not. Thus, I am choosing to move on. Was your response, especially with that much obvious and outright rudeness, really warranted?
Considering the growth in the area, Costco isn't the one to convince; it should be aimed at town council that seems to not want large chains, especially big box. The parking lot requirements for a Costco are essentially equivalent to 20-30 homes, maybe even more.
I believe it is aimed at the town council and mayor.
There's a place for small business, and there's a place for big box stores. I don't buy anything at a Costco that I'd ever consider buying at a small business.
I was talking to a group of old timers, all local natives, about this last week. They are all good ole boys. But they all pretty much were saying the same thing Southbel said. They're all ready to leave because the charm of a small beach town is being replaced gradually with more and more stuff that you can do and see in Anytown, USA.
That commercialization of this community is a two edged sword. People come here for the charm. Keep stamping out the Carolina Parks and Oyster Points like hot cakes. Ignore the need to save the natural beauty of Shem Creek and its shrimp boats (all but gone) and what you'll be left with is just another east coast city near the water. You kill the goose that laid the golden egg and this place becomes another Myrtle beach.

Seems like many in every generation says the same thing. I believe that the council has done a fine job of preserving Shem Creek. Even with the approval of the parking garage it won't really change. MtP is a very long way from MB.
Change always happens. Many of those that don't want any change couldn't afford to live here when demand goes up and supply doesn't meet demand.

I don't know if I agree with your last point though. For me, to buy out in the country and for what I want, I am going to pay easily four times what I would have paid in Mt P for the same size house. It's the land, of course but I'm okay with that. I can afford to live in Mt Pleasant. I just need a little more quiet and space and a little less congestion is all.
I don't have bad things to say about Mt Pleasant. It really is a very nice town with great schools, wonderful small businesses, and very very safe. I just need less people and 'stuff' around me. In all fairness, it has changed rather dramatically in the last twenty years. In the last five years or so, it seems to have accelerated. I do miss the small town I fell in love with but it's never going to be that way again.
