If you can stand being further out, Ridgeville or Awendaw for example, your housing costs would reduce greatly but you'd probably have to travel further to work.
In regard to the OP- Downtown isn't really the center of young professionals it once was. Tends to be fresh out of college & the party crowd with the exception of those who are very well funded. At the moment I'm not sure how far $1400/mo will get you downtown unless you are fine with a smaller space or willing to have a roommate. Mt Pleasant attracts a lot of young people but doesn't have as centralized of attractions/districts aside from most of the complexes inside 526 having younger folks.
West Ashley close in is a bit of hub for bars/restaurants that attract the older young people (ie late 20s and 30s as opposed to mid 20s that still head downtown or the beaches.) James Island is pretty similar but a little more spread out. The other spot to consider is Park Circle in North Chareleston- Mixon and that swim club are the hot ticket right now. But North Charleston as a whole is a little less sought after but also less expensive.
I'll be commenter 102 to say have at least prospects for employment lined up first. You actually seem pretty responsible so I think you are more likely to recoil if you have lowball or low for industry job offers thrown at you. Charleston is pretty well known for basically payine 20-30% for professional positions. That said- being in RE is a pretty good hedge against that since it is such a hot market.
