Gyms tend to be very subjective in this area. Gold's Gym on James Island and East Shore (ESAC) in Mt P & West Ashley seem to be the two people are most pleased with. Pivotal Fitness is also supposed to be good but I am not familiar with them. There are also hole in the wall gyms and other chains that please other people. The gym downtown on Wentworth between Meeting and King springs to mind as the one that seems most youthful.

Also a lot of people use the various yoga, Crossfit and pilates studios/gyms.

FWIW on neighborhoods I'll third the find work first and then the most suitable area for you close to it meme. For the OP I would almost look into trying to get into one of the goofball rentals out on Folly. It has a huge area of Marsh between it and James Island, a main strip that has gotten pretty active and the neighborhoods quite down the further you get from the beach and Center Street. The year-rounders have a pretty tight community. The big detriment is weekend traffic.

I'd look at the Coleman/Bridgeside areas pretty carefully because that is the hot area right now and stays busy.

What do you need from your gym?

Lunk head and only want to sling weights? Into a more social experience?
