For shutters here is a place to start. I have nothing to do with the company and have never done business with them but they do give info and prices so a starting point:
Those are nothing like mine. The ones that I have are flat, not wavy and are clear as glass. You don't even notice them. Plus mine stay up all year so I don't have the hassle of hiring someone to put them up and take them down. I don't need any storage space for them, either,

I don't know that I'd leave them up all year. Lexan starts looking yellow after awhile in the sun.

The ones shown are to be put up in case of a storm, not stayy up all the time.
I lived on a golf course where windows were always getting hit and broken. The HOA did put up some clear protectors on some windows but after a few years, they discolored and blocked light. Also the windows could be opened but due to the shield, there was no air flow. I would not do such a thing.

I was concerned about the same thing. Then I found out that the cheap, wavy ones will turn yellow and get brittle. The ones that I bought are thicker, flat and have a written 10 year warranty against clouding and yellowing. They have been up for 6 years and no sign of either thing happening. The ones on the front of the house have awnings but the bathroom window doesn't.
I don't think I saw it on this thread, but what's the consensus on the "hurricane fabric" type products? Seems to be lighter and easier to put up then plywood, and cheaper than static panels of poly or special rated windows.

I checked into fabric. I think it was called Astroshield or something like that. It works great for lanais and open areas, but the amount of space required behind it to allow it to absorb the energy of an impact made it unusable to go over my windows. It's lightweight, easier to install than panels, easy to roll up and stores in a small space.
Another one was a netting called Cat 5, I think. You fasten it to the wall just below the roof and then down the walls. Then you bring the bottom out about 6 feet and install anchors into the ground and form a tent-like area. I believe it uses straps and buckles at the roof and in the ground anchors. The area formed can be used to put lawn furniture and other outdoor ornaments. I thought it was pretty neat, but at my age I wasn't interested in climbing ladders. You just have to make sure that you remember where the anchors are when you mow the lawn and make sure that they are sunk down it. I read that some people use those sprinkler head rings to locate the anchors so that they can find them in the future.
Plus, when I leave for Minnesota during the summer, as soon as either one of these goes up everyone driving by knows that I'm on vacation and my house becomes a target for break-ins.
Got an example of a hurricane fabric ? I have a bathroom window of glass blocks 4'x4' that I need to protect.
This is one manufacturer that I was looking at, but when we built our house 4+ years ago, there was a generic one that was offered too (I'll have to look back at the option list for more details).
