I'm sure I'm not the only one. I just looked at my bill online. Yikes. It was the highest bill I've had in quite a few years. I'm so ready for warmer weather.

Are you sure it was recording the snow period? Mine was very high as well, but it was for December, not the snow week, the first week of January.

10kw heating strips cost you about $1.25 per hour that they run. That's before adding in anything else in your house. Of course, those strips aren't necessarily running 24/7, but I felt like my heat was turning in about 20min of every 60min. So, you'd be looking at $70 just for one-zone heating for those 7 days of mostly sub-freezing temperatures we had.

My bill was for the period 12/13/17 - 1/16/18.

December is always high, that's for SCE&G's Christmas to themselves, didn't you know that? Mine was twice what it was for last December, but the real reason for that lays in their big bankrupt lost IMO.

Years ago when I had an ancient heat pump that was on the outs, I was forced to use the heat strips. We had a cold snap (talking Dec 2009) and it was Christmas. I had company. The house wouldn't break 55° with the heat pump unless I turned on the heating strips.

My bill for that month? About double. It was $510. And I only ran those heating strips for a few days. To be fair, the heat pump probably ran nonstop. It was at its end-of-life and was terribly inefficient.

Please clue me in: what are "heating strips"? Does it have anything to do with the thermostat saying it went to "Aux Heating"? Thanks

Correct. Aux heat means that extra elements inside your handler are activated. These get extremely hot and this cause large bills. Sometimes you can notice the difference in smell when Aux heat is activated...

lol. My mom just emailed me that she was checking her SCE&G bill online and it was about 350.00. That's high for her. I hadn't even complained to her about mine but evidently her bill is especially high too. Mine was about 75.00 over the norm for this time of year.
