My 14 year son was invited to a friend's birthday party at a vacant home on SI with no adult or parental supervision. This would be a night party with the option of staying thru the night. Am I alone in thinking this is a terrible idea? I know some of his friends sneak out of their homes during the night to play ding dong ditch and manhunt or just roam the streets and am concerned on so many levels.

Let’s see:
14 year old ....check
Rebellious friends....check
Overnight party....check
No supervision.....check
Vacant home......check

Trust your gut. It’s doubtful thy’re just going to have fruit punch and read bible stories all night.

Where are the parents?? 14 year olds can’t afford homes on SI by themselves.

My child is a little bit older than that, and I'd have said no way in hell. I think it's neglect, as in failing to provide adult supervision appropriate to the child's age and development.

One of those things that's all fun and games until someone gets hurt.....

Last year my son was invited to a friend's party on SI and the parents rented the house across the street for four 12/13 year olds to spend the night alone. I was furious when I found out. But it was not surprising for these parents.

Sounds like these parents are more concerned with being their child's friend rather than a parent.

I once was out several hours late (in the days before cell phones) and my mother woke up half the town hunting me down. She gave two craps about me liking it and even fewer about it being uncool to get half the world in trouble. I contrast that with one of my friends who is always worried about how something will upset their children... If its a matter of thinking your child has a sincere health or safety concern, worry is warranted. But wanting the kid to avoid any instance of discomfort or unpopularity... the phrases come to mind in two seconds...

'Johnny isn't my kid.'
'My house my rules.'
'I'm not your friend.'
'You'll thank me one day.'
'Your reputation doesn't matter to me.'

My father was usually more blunt-
'that's why that kid will never get anywhere in life.'
'if there so great, go live with them.'
'not in this house'

Obviously some kids turned out just fine but I can name a couple of coddled teens who hit some real problems and several more who were still dependent on mom and dad into adulthood. And several parents who still wanted to be cool and hand with their kids into their 20s which is just bizarre.

I recall my father driving to my friend's houses as well.

The vacant home on SI isn't even fully furnished so odds are they will be up to no good. Good boys or not, boredom usually finds trouble.
