This past weekend, we tried two seafood restaurants in the Charleston area. We were very disappointed in our experience at The Wreck. The food was not good. It did not taste fresh. The service was mediocre. The prices were high for the quality of food. We were there on a Friday night, and there were many empty tables.
We also visited the Fleet Landing Restaurant in Charleston during our trip. The atmosphere was so inviting, the food was incredible, the service was quick and the price was very reasonable. We did have to wait for a table (Saturday night), but it was definitely worth the wait!
This is interesting - an old thread revived 5 years later and it sounds like the Wreck has seen better days.
Any updates from the locals as to what happened? There were such raves for this restaurant at the beginning of the thread.
as I posted in the other thread, something drastically changed at the Wreck for the worse... actually several things went down with the wreck except the price!
the last time we were there it was really bad, and way overpriced... the service sucked, the food sucked, the atmosphere sucked and the price was ridiculously high... we won't be returning, took that place off of our list for good...
The only time we visited The Wreck it was, as already stated, very mediocre. And, as you already have heard, was extremely expensive.
The owner was at the register and took my money. He spoke narry a word as I handed over my cash. Not a peep. It was painfully obvious that he could have cared less about our experience and only wanted my hard earned $$$. I could hardly believe he never asked me anything, or even looked happy to see me at all. He was straight faced, took my money, and simply said "good night".

They are riding on their years old accolades.
That's too bad. What about Hanks? Still in business? Still good?
First of all, having lived on the east and west coast and Charleston, I do not believe seafood in Charleston is really that special considering their method is usually coat it in a batter and deep fry it until is is brown.
The place I always found to offer the best selection/variety is Hymans. Some say it is a tourist trap but if it is, then it is a great tourist trap.
We recently returned to Charleston for a visit. Tops on our list of restaurants were Mustard Seed and Hymans. Loved them.

I sorta have to agree.
Unless someone in here can point me in a better direction .. Hyman's still has my vote for best seafood in the area.
Everything else seems to be over-priced for what you get quantity, quality and atmosphere -wise.
Hanks is good. We were there Saturday night and had another lovely meal. Local sea bass was yummy as was the oyster sampler.
