My boyfriend got a job in Daniel Island. He will be relocating the last week of May. I am a school teacher and will follow him the first week of June. I look at craigslist and the charleston MLS rentals all the time but I am unsure of when I should start seriously inquiring about what I see. Any advice would be so helpful! We will be renting.

Are you going to be renting or buying? If renting start about a month ahead of when you will be moving, Schools start looking for new teachers in the spring to fill vacancies for the next year. You will have to go to the school district before you go to a school for a job interview.

Also check with apartment finder web page.

Ole Tom Cat is right on..3-4 weeks before you need to be in there. Some rentals are move in ready and they want some one in there pronto, but if you start a month ahead you'll have some breathing room and (hopefully) not as much stress.

You're also in an odd spot location wise. Daniel Island is as pricey as any area beyond the peninsula (and the units are newer/nicer so they are pricier than a most units on the peninsula until you get near and south of Calhoun.) The two closest towns will be the next highest (Mt Pleasant) and probably one of the lowest (N Charleston) places to look.

The Park Circle area of North Charleston might be a nice place to look for a smaller home to rent. It is up and coming and has a couple of restaurants and bars. And Mt Pleasant's market is flooded with homes so you might find a home in one of the older Longpoint or Mathis Ferry subdivisions for rent. Renting from a professionally managed apartment complex would be easiest but it wouldn't hurt to try and find an alternative.

Try the main paper, the Post and Courier http://www.charleston.net/ (classifieds are a little blue bar under the traffic/weather icons)
or the free local weekly, City Paper http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/gyrobase/index (choose the classifieds tab.) The city paper targets a younger crowd- as much as any free paper can actually target anything.

I am sure the Moultrie News might be of help but have no clue what its site is. Is there a Daniel Island only paper now?

Charleston County may not be the best place for any new teacher next year due to the budget cuts and closing of five schools, there are going to be alot of senior teachers bumping younger teachers out of their positions. May only be able to find positions at some of the worse schools.
