Why is that a good thing? Can't a Mom & Pop/independently owned be more creative and put out better quality?

Also what is so great about Five Guys? If I don't eat red meat should I even bother trying it? Is it strictly burgers? I've driven by the one on 17 in West Ashley but they never seem particularly crowded.

That comment was because most people in that area (and most areas these days) tend to overlook the small, locally owned businesses in favor of the chain stores. It was tongue in cheek at best.

I've seen many small mom & pop stores (in that area) suffer only to see chain stores thrive. Seems folks like chains, hang-out places, and bars.

Yes, independently owned stores can indeed be more creative and put out better quality...but that doesn't matter these days.

The chain store that was there before them didn't thrive, it was a Quiznos....

I've actually seen quite a few Quiznos for sale or out of business in several markets.

I'll even qualify that last statement I made. Here's a quote I gathered about Quiznos:

"
A tally taken at the end of January, 2009, showed that Quiznos closings were outnumbering openings by three to one.
Scores of Quiznos are for sale, often at fire sale prices. One day in early February, over 10 percent of the first 140 franchises listed for sale on Selling a business | Buy a business on Businesses For Sale were Quiznos, with prices ranging from $60,000 to $375,000. Sellers had pulled the Quiznos name from listings that had been on the Web site longer, offering simply an outlet of a 'national sandwich chain.' Their prices included $30,000 for a store in Nevada; $59,000 for one in Thousand Oaks and "any reasonable offer" for one in Florida."

My point is that it is very difficult for new mom & pops to break into a market while it seems most franchises just keep opening and going. But then they have collective marketing and even a new store isn't new...just an extension of all the others down the road.

It's a fact that people would rather spend money at a franchise than the local joint. I'm proof positive on that one. I had a ton of folks come by Saturday that said they only came because the Burger King (1/2 mile down the road) was closed because of the power outage. Go figure.

Cape, hopefully they will be repeat customers. It's been a very long time since I've eaten at a BK or the other burger joints. I prefer local places over chains. Where is your BBQ place? The last time we ate at our favorite place it tasted funny and made us sick so I refuse to go back so I'm looking for a new place.

Ah on the other side of S'Ville. I'm trying to picture where the FL is. I haven't ventured over that way in a long time.
