If you haven't been, you should head out to Wadmalaw Island today and attend the First Flush Festival. (it has nothing to do with toilets! LOL) It is from 11-5, I believe, and includes live music all day (several different stages), lots of food and drink (including local wine from our own Irwin Vineyards), crafts, tours of the tea plantation on trolley cars, tea tastings, crafts, and more!

The ticket prices were $15, then in May went up to $20, and today they are $25 at the gate.

You cannot bring your own coolers anymore. Just bring your family and lawn chairs and come on out! Some even bring tents and screened gazebos to set up for the day.

To get directions and names of bands playing, go to The Charleston Tea Plantation website.

First flush tea is harvested immediately after the spring rains. It is greenish in color and lighter in character than black tea. It is best tea to relax with and of best quality and great drink.

with all due respect I wouldn't advise wasting your time with the tea plantation unless you have absolutely nothing else to do but waste time, my kids n wife still crack on me for taking them out there...

hour drive to stand in line, to watch a big screen 30 second movie... then walk 20 ft and watch another, then 20 ft and another... about 5 or 6 big screens later you look out over the tea fields to say, yep there's tea growing, and you're done... on your way home...

you should see the looks I get even today, a few years later, when anything tea farm related comes on TV

but it is a pretty drive out there, guess u have to be real old and have never seen any kind of farm to appreciate it... cheesy

Meks, did you go to the winery and distillery while you were out there? They are both part of the trip....

Yep, you missed the best part if you didn't go to vineward and distillery. That's where the famous Sweet Tea Vodka originated! and the kids would have liked the little petting zoo...
