Thinking about renting a boat this weekend for half a day ... to entertain some out of town folks.

Charter boats are pricey. I found one place that will rent a boat for half-a-day. Only problem is ... nobody in the group has ever driven a boat.

Looking for someone who will operate the boat for a low fee ... in return they get to come along for the ride and enjoy the food !

Anywhere I can find such a person ?

Pretty high liability for someone to just enjoy some food. Looks like you'll be paying an insured captain or going on that charter. I sure wouldn't take that liability.

Best of luck and enjoy the weekend.

You may want to DM Capt Rick on here and see what he can set up for you, would be much better than trying to find someone to just drive yall around....

I know I could do it but I am expensive.....

To hire a Capt for money you will need a permit from the state for the boat that you plan to rent. Its 150.00
Im not sure about the insurance.

How many people are in your party? I might be able to help you..

A friend was telling me that when he started boating, he went through some sort of boating safety/instructional course. I have never owned a boat, so I may be off base here.

A lot of the boat dealers give you in water instruction on how to operate your boat, DNR and the coast guard offers a course in boat safety.

If you are going to charter a boat they first make sure you are competent enough to handle it. How many people are you taking out? Do you have to IMPRESS them with a big fancy "yacht" or would they have just as much fun in something smaller? It probably wouldn't take you long to learn how to handle something like an Aquasport or a Mako. They are about 18 to 22 feet long generally with outboard engines. They have fairly high top sides and are pretty dry. They don't have cabins or heads (toilets) on board. They are fun for picnics and for getting from point A to point B quickly.

Did you already call this place? Isle of Palms - Boat Rentals
It looks like it would run around $300 for a half day or so....

Taking them out on the schooner Pride would be a lot more impressive and enjoyable (at least it would be for someone like me) because you'd be sailing on an 80+ foot schooner. It is also probably less expensive at $31 per person and a lot less stressful than chartering a boat if you don't have any boat handling experience. http://www.zerve.com/SailThePride.
