It's around 4 hours to get to the Myrtle Beach area give or take 30 minutes. I wouldn't go to North Myrtle Beach (Cherry Grove is part of) as the beaches there are not very nice due to erosion. Myrtle Beach has much better beaches, just avoid the area around 9th Ave S. to about 21st Ave. N. Hotels there are old.
However it's much easier to get to the Charleston area than Myrtle Beach and that would be my first choice. You can make that in about 3 hours. Lots of history, beaches and overall just a lot nicer than the ultra touristy MB area.
If you want quiet time, try Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms, just outside Charleston. Nothing to do there but bike, eat and play in the ocean. Takes 3 1/2 hours.
Or go the extra 45 mins to Hilton Head Island.
Stay away from Myrtle Beach.
We love Isle of Palms outside Charleston! We were just there this weekend! The water was warm, the waves were plentiful, and the were not jellyfish that we saw! :-) We usually drive home the same day, so I don't have any recs. on places to stay- but the area of beach is very family friendly with nice facilities (bathrooms, etc)

The jellyfish are notoriously bad on SC beaches in August! Glad you didn't encounter any this early in September
Bobo - Isle of Palms and the Charleston area would be my suggestion too for a great quick weekend trip to the beach
I would add my 2 cents to say great idea on going to the Charleston area. Plus it would be a very educational opportunity for the kids to see American History (for real).
PS: I was just outside of Rockford this weekend. Sycamore/DeKalb area, specifically. IT WAS COLD. And, the corn didn't look all that good. Seems like our corn (in NC) looks better...
Loves, we found out about Aug. being jellyfish last year! I looked into on the Charleston boards and in Mid-August there was some chat about jellyfish not being prevalent after the first week having jellyfish everywhere! So, we took our chances and lucked out! :-)
We just went to Wilmington last week and spent a couple days at Wrightsville. It was a nice beach, but did have a lot of shells in the water - which isn't good on bare feet. It was tolerable though.
Parking was tough to get after noon or so, but it was the holiday weekend. We had a great time, but my wife and I decided the extra 30-45 minutes drive wasn't worth it since we could be in Charleston in 3 hours and the beaches there are gorgeous.
Well, the weather forecast for this weekend made me hold off.
But for future reference, can you guys give any specific recommendations for good beaches and hotels in Charleston? Isle of Palms looks great but there don't seem to be many places to stay. The Palms hotel was booked.
