This was confusing to us when we moved south too....where I'm from you live in a town, that same town is your mailing address, and you go to a school in your town, paid town taxes. What county you were from didn't really matter for anything, not even voting as political districts were never by town or county. I'm not sure my kids knew what county we lived in before as it didnt' matter!
Glad you seem to have worked it out! I imagine having schools and such run by county should save money as there should be less administrators at the top as you don't have a school superintendant, and head of X, Y and Z for each town.

Here's another funny tidbit. When we were looking for houses, we almost bought in a community called Chestnut, which was half in Mecklenburg County & half in Union County. We wanted Union County for schools & property taxes, so we looked at lots that were only in Union County.

Your zip code (and mailing address town name) are only a function of which post office carries your mail. If the Matthews post office carries your mail you will get a Matthews mailing address. For tax purposes (and school purposes) you could live in Weddington (Union County) or actually in the City of Matthews (Mecklenburg County) and still have a Matthews mailing address. But if you were in Union County you would be Matthews, 28104 and if you were in Mecklenburg County you would be Matthews, 28105. In Union County we actually have people that live in Town of Indian Trail and have a Monroe, 28110 address because Monroe post office carries their mail.

Interesting thread. Know people in Carrabus county, that have a Huntersville address, (which is in Mecklenberg County) but pay Carrabus County Taxes.

My zip code 28262 is listed as having addresses in Charlotte/Meck and Concord/Cabarrus. Everytime I order something with a CC I have to verify Mecklenburg or Cabarrus.

Same with 28086. I have to select Gaston or Cleveland.
