Another option is the town of Beech Mountain. At over 5500 ft it's elevation is the highest of any incorporated municipality in eastern North America. It often has weather similar to Mt. Mitchell with the advantage that it is easier to get to than Mt. Mitchell and it is a real town with more things to do.
Charlotte area was around 96 today. At Beech Mountain it was 74.
(not discounting Mt. Mitchell)
Actually for getting away from the heat, anywhere above 4000ft will be nice. Fortunately for Charlotte this is only about 90 miles from here. It's an easy day trip.
