Harrisburg is a GREAT town. Has a small town feel, with all the conveniences of being minutes from Uptown Charlotte. I'm sure you'll be thrilled to live there!
Honestly, after moving here from the traffic hell of Chicago, I tend to completely forget that some people want a commute shorter than 20 min or so (and that such a commute is even possible).

It really depends on what part of Harrisburg & what part of Kannapolis. I live in Kannapolis and get to UNCC in 20 min door to door, so I'd imagine it would be about the same or slightly less for most parts, but you would want to stay near I85 in Kannapolis. I think if you lived on the other side of the Research Campus is when your commute would edge toward 30 min.

If the OP is going for "closer is better" than Harrisburg is a great choice... if you find you don't mind a little extra commute or that your budget isn't going far enough there your money may go a little bit further in Kannapolis.

You will have no problem getting a rental house in Harrisburg for the same as what you are paying now. It's really a great town.. far enough from the city to be nice but close enough to get what you need in minutes. We have been here for 20 years and we wouldn't live anywhere else. Schools are better in Cabarrus County (compared to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools anyway) and the area is still pretty safe. I wouldn't live anywhere near the University area... going bad really fast over there. Harrisburg or Concord is the way to go if you are looking to rent or own. You will enjoy living in Harrisburg. Good Luck!
